The Hall County Sheriff’s Office as a member of a regional organization known as SCALES (South Central Area of Law Enforcement Services) is pleased to announce the availability of a tool that allows parents to monitor home computer activity including what your kids are doing and what those who approach your kids are asking. The computer software purchased is a product called ComputerCOP.
ComputerCOP is a software package that all SCALES agencies will make available, free of charge, to all citizens of our communities. This software can be checked out from area schools or from your local law enforcement agency for a few days and ran on your home computer. Just follow the instructions that come with the software to run the program on your computer. It will pull up every image and e-mail that the computer has ever downloaded, whether it has been deleted off the hard drive or not.
• ComputerCOP scans for images, Internet graphics and digital camera and cell phone images loaded on the PC.
• It also scans text including web pages, downloaded text, web pages and Internet- based emails for keywords of a sexual, violent, gang or drug related terminology.
We realize that most parents trust their children and they should. We want to remind parents that it is not always a matter of trusting your child. With today’s internet your loved ones are a target to online predators. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
• One in five youths say they have received a sexual approach or solicitation.
• One in 33 had received an aggressive sexual solicitation.
• One in four had unwanted exposure to sexually explicit material.
• One in 17 has been threatened or harassed or Cyber-bullying.
With ComputerCop parents can monitor periodically will go a long ways towards providing a parent of what is going on and have hopefully offer a little peace of mind.
This product will be available at the main office at District 1 R School and can also be checked out at other area schools as well as in Grand Island at the Sheriff’s Office in the Law Enforcement Center, 111 Public Safety Drive.
